Ignatius endured the physical and emotional pain of his war injury and the long recovery process. He faced opposition from church authorities who were suspicious of his methods and teachings. He also struggled with scrupulosity (excessive guilt over sin) and the challenge of leading a rapidly growing religious order.
Ignatius struggled with pride and ambition in his early life as a soldier. He experienced chronic stomach problems that caused him significant pain throughout his life. He also faced the challenge of balancing his mystical experiences with the practical demands of leading the Jesuits.
Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) was a Spanish priest, theologian, and founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), one of the most influential religious orders in the Catholic Church. Born Íñigo López de Loyola in the Basque region of Spain, Ignatius was a soldier until a cannonball shattered his leg during the Battle of Pamplona in 1521. During his long recovery, he read lives of the saints and experienced a profound conversion, dedicating his life to Christ. He spent a year in prayer and penance at Manresa, where he developed the Spiritual Exercises, a systematic method of prayer, meditation, and discernment. Ignatius studied theology in Paris, where he gathered a group of companions who took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, forming the Society of Jesus in 1540. The Jesuits became known for their rigorous education, missionary work, and loyalty to the Pope. Ignatius emphasized "finding God in all things" and practiced discernment of spirits to guide decision-making. He served as the first Superior General of the Jesuits, overseeing the order's rapid expansion. Ignatius died in Rome in 1556 and was canonized in 1622. His Spiritual Exercises remain a foundational text for Christian spirituality and discernment.
